How many Apple Watch games are there?

As of 2026-08-20, at least 4,599 games on the US App Store ship an Apple Watch component. They come from 1,003 different studios.

Nobody publishes this number, so we counted. The App Store has no "list every watch game" endpoint, which is why the figure has been missing rather than secret. Everything below is measured from the App Store itself on 2026-08-20, and the full dataset is free to download and check.

Statistic Value Based on
As of 2026-08-20, at least 4,599 games on the US App Store ship an Apple Watch component. 4599 n = 4,599
Those 4,599 Apple Watch games come from 1,003 different studios. 1003 n = 4,599
54% of studios that have made an Apple Watch game have made exactly one (540 of 1,003). 53.8% n = 1,003
Testing this census against an independent set of search terms found 90% of the games it surfaced were already counted, which puts the true catalogue at roughly 5,110 games. 90% n = 251
Checking 250 of these studios against the UK, German, Japanese, Korean and Chinese storefronts found at most 2.4% of their watch games missing from the US store, so a US-only count loses very little for studios it already knows about. 2.4% n = 250
86% of Apple Watch games have not been updated in over 1 year (3,976 of 4,599). 86.5% n = 4,599
84% of Apple Watch games have not been updated in over 2 years (3,853 of 4,599). 83.8% n = 4,599
82% of Apple Watch games have not been updated in over 3 years (3,753 of 4,599). 81.6% n = 4,599
74% of Apple Watch games have not been updated in over 5 years (3,388 of 4,599). 73.7% n = 4,599
The median Apple Watch game was last updated 8.6 years ago. 8.6 years n = 4,599
26% of Apple Watch games were already on the App Store before the Apple Watch existed and had watch support added later (1,212 of 4,599). 26.4% n = 4,599
86% of Apple Watch games are free to download (3,948 of 4,599). 85.8% n = 4,599
Among paid Apple Watch games, the median price is $0.99. 0.99 USD n = 651
The median Apple Watch game download is 28.8 MB. 28.8 MB n = 4,599
Nine out of ten Apple Watch games are under 151 MB. 151 MB n = 4,599
25% of Apple Watch games have no user ratings at all (1,129 of 4,599). 24.5% n = 4,599
Among Apple Watch games that have any ratings, the median has 15 ratings. 15 ratings n = 3,470
The average rating of a rated Apple Watch game is 3.99 out of 5. 3.99 stars n = 3,470

When did these apps first appear?

Read this one carefully, because it is not what it looks like. This is when each app first reached the App Store, not when it gained a watch version. 26.4% of them were already on sale before the Apple Watch existed in April 2015. The App Store publishes no date for when a watch component was added, so nobody can chart that, us included. 2026 is a partial year.

How we counted

Searching the App Store for game keywords and counting the results does not work. Search ranks by relevance, which favours recent and actively updated apps, so a search-only count misses the abandoned long tail and overstates how many games shipped recently. Our first attempt did exactly that and produced a release curve we could not defend.

So the count runs in two stages. Keyword search, 269 terms of it, is used only to discover studios, never to count apps. Then every studio found has its entire catalogue pulled by developer ID, which ignores search ranking completely and recovers the dead apps search hides. The weak point is honest to name: a studio no keyword ever surfaced is invisible, and pulling catalogues cannot fix that.

To size that blind spot we ran a coverage test: a separate 65-term vocabulary, deliberately sharing no words with the crawl's seeds, searched the store independently. 90% of the watch games it found were already in the census (226 of 251, tested 21 August 2026). Taken at face value that puts the true count near 5,100. It is an optimistic check, because the test relies on keyword search too, so a game invisible to every English keyword escapes both. Read 4,599 as a floor.

How complete is this count?

We tested it rather than guessing. A census like this can only reach studios its keyword seeds surfaced, so we ran a second, deliberately unrelated set of search terms and checked how many of the games it found were already counted.

Testing this census against an independent set of search terms found 90% of the games it surfaced were already counted, which puts the true catalogue at roughly 5,110 games.

The first version of this page said 2,782. That test is why it does not any more. Every time coverage improved the count rose and the abandonment rate rose with it, which says the games keyword search hides are disproportionately dead ones. Treat the total as a floor. The percentages are the durable part, and if they are wrong they are wrong in the direction of being too generous.

Is this global or just the US?

The US storefront, and we measured what that costs. Checking 250 of these studios against the UK, German, Japanese, Korean and Chinese storefronts found at most 2.4% of their watch games missing from the US store, so a US-only count loses very little for studios it already knows about.

The exception is China. The same studios returned about a quarter as many games there, which is the mirror of a Chinese watch-game ecosystem that English search terms cannot reach. That part is missing and we cannot size it.
