What games can you play on Apple Watch?
You can play real games on Apple Watch in most genres: puzzle, card, dice, arcade, racing, strategy, word and story games all play on the wrist. This page goes genre by genre through the ones that actually work, with a pick or two in each that you can download today.
We make Apple Watch games ourselves (Crown Heist, Soar, Shut The Box, Crown Jack and Crown Climb, all marked as ours below). Every third-party game here was checked against its live store listing, and it has to claim watch gameplay to be included: plenty of famous apps ship a watch extension that only handles notifications, and those do not count as games you can play.
Puzzle games
The biggest category on the watch by a distance. Most of it is ports of phone puzzles, which is why the standouts are the ones designed for a two-minute wrist session.
Our safecracking game. You turn the Digital Crown like a real combination dial and the haptics grow stronger near each pin, so it plays silently in a meeting or with its 11-track soundtrack up. The game that proved the wrist could be a lock, back in 2016. Rotate the Crown, feel for the vibration, beat the timer, collect the treasure. It is one mechanic and it stays one mechanic, which its 3.6-star average reflects, but at $0.99 with no purchases inside it is still the cheapest way to feel why Crown-and-haptics works.
Card games
Cards suit the wrist better than almost anything: one glance at a hand, one tap to act. The genre is thinner than it should be, so the good ones stand out fast.
Our blackjack, released September 2026. A full hand plays out in three to eight seconds: glance, tap, done. Hit, Stand, Double or Split against the dealer and climb a lifetime skill score. No real-money gambling anywhere in it, just the decisions. Free to download.
A real Klondike solitaire that somehow fits a watch face without turning the cards into pixels. Free with ads, $9.99 to remove them, which is steep next to everything else here but the ad-free version is the one people keep.
Dice games
Small enough that the census does not track it as its own genre; dice games hide under Board and Casual.
Our take on the centuries-old pub game. Nine tiles stand open, two dice roll, and every throw is a real decision: a 9 can close the 9, or the 6 and 3, or the 5 and 4, or even the 4, 3 and 2. The dice are proper 3D physics objects that tumble when you flick your wrist. Released August 2026, free to download.
Flying and momentum games
Tiny Wings and Alto’s Odyssey never came to the watch, and most of what did arrive is abandoned. We wrote up the whole situation separately.
Our momentum flier, and the closest thing on the wrist to Tiny Wings, which never came to the watch. Hold to dive down a slope, release at the crest, and the height you get is exactly the speed you built, because the game adds no launch bonus at all. Seventeen biomes from Space down to the Core, each with its own art and music, and every one you unlock becomes a watch face. Free, released August 2026.
Climbing games
Too few to count as their own genre in the census: climbing on the wrist hides under Arcade. A game about reaching the next hold turns out to suit a screen you glance at between moves.
Our totem climber, released September 2026. Your climber has four limbs numbered 1 to 4 and they move in that order, one peg at a time, while the Digital Crown swings the view around the totem. Grab a peg that matches a limb's colour to refill stamina, or run dry and fall. Ten worlds stack up every 150 metres, from the Ground to the Void, and the Daily Climb gives everyone the same totem once a day. Free to download, with the first four worlds free.
Arcade and retro
The healthiest third-party corner of the store. Collections dominate because one purchase covers a lot of small games.
Twenty-three arcade games in one $1.99 purchase, and the same buy covers Apple Watch, iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Vision Pro. It holds 4.8 stars across more than 12,000 ratings and was updated this month, which makes it both the best-rated and best-maintained third-party game on the platform. If you buy one watch game, this is the sensible one.
A proper space shooter on a screen the size of a stamp, good enough that Apple put it in both its Great on watchOS and Our Favourite Apple Watch Apps collections. $1.99 once, 33 MB, and a 4.5-star average. Its sibling Jupiter Attack is more of the same if you finish it.
Racing games
Genuine wrist racers steer with the Digital Crown, which turns out to feel a lot like a steering wheel. Most store results in this genre are phone games, so the real ones are worth naming.
The most-rated racing game still being maintained: steer by turning the Digital Crown like a wheel. Free, close to 2,000 ratings, and updated within the last year, which in this genre makes it nearly unique. Most of the other 149 racing entries in our census are phone games wearing a watch icon.
Sports games
Mostly companion apps for real sports; playable sports games are rarer.
A sports-themed collection from the same developer as Arcadia, with the same recipe: many small games, one $1.99 purchase, every Apple platform covered. 4.8 stars across 1,500 ratings and updated this month. The closest thing to a sports game that genuinely plays on the wrist rather than tracking one.
Strategy games
Real strategy exists on the wrist, but sessions have to fit a glance.
Real strategy in ten-second swipes: advance your blocks, read the terrain, take the objective. It is from 2016 and it never needed an update to stay good. $0.99, no ads, no purchases, and still the best answer to whether thinking games work on a watch.
Word games
Short rounds and no time pressure make word games a natural fit for a watch. The catalogue is old, so pick the ones still being looked after.
A free word search sized for the screen it is on, which sounds like a low bar until you try the ones that are not. Quick rounds, no account, and it has outlived most of the 286 word games in our census, only 28 of which have been updated in the last two years.
Story games
Interactive fiction through notifications is one of the few genres the watch does better than the phone.
The 2015 classic that used the watch better than anything since. Stranded astronaut Taylor messages you through your day in real time, and your replies, tapped straight from the wrist, decide whether they live. It topped paid charts in 55 countries and still holds 4.7 stars. $2.99, no ads. It is reading rather than playing, and the deliberate waits between messages are the point.
Trivia and quiz
The famous trivia brands ship watch components for notifications rather than play, so their store listings flatter the wrist without serving it. We have not found a maintained quiz game we would recommend yet; when one appears, it goes here.

Several apps bundle dozens of tiny games behind one purchase, which suits how people actually play on a watch.
